Midford

The Somerset & Dorset in N Gauge

This large model (14ft x 8ft) was given to the club by the Chester Area Group of the N Gauge Society. It had previously been their main exhibition layout and then stored for some years.

This is the club’s first venture into N gauge, but several members are also modelling in this scale, some also being members of the N Gauge Society.

Although a model of a Somerset & Dorset station, it has never been exhibited in the South West, but it seems to have travelled everywhere else!

We are currently replacing some track, performing under board repairs and have recently been renewing scenery.

  1. Nice to see “Midford” up and running again. You now have a great choice of rolling stock available to run on it compared to the days when we built the layout.

  3. Midford, although still a work in progress, was shown at Mendip 2016. The layout ran very well and looked good.
Well done the rest of the Midford team.

  4. Hi. I am currently scratch building for a planned 2mm fine scale layout of Midford station. I have purchased the excellent book on Midford by Mike Arlett which has plans for signal box and station, but I am struggling to find any for the goods shed. Only references is a end on pic in book and the one featured on your excellent layout. Could you please advise me if there are any plans of said goods shed as I don’t just want to use modellers licence! Any help in this matter would be gratefully accepted. Regards Peter

    • Hi Peter, I don’t know of any drawings of the goods shed. All I can suggest is you look at every S&D book you can.
I believe the model’s one is too large so I’m going to look into this myself, when time permits!

  5. Hi there – thanks for making my trip to the Edington Show today thoroughly worthwhile – what an absolutely excellent layout – both in terms of its quality & its historical accuracy – what a gift! It never ceases to amaze me what a generous bunch railway modellers can be – you lucky people. Look forward to seeing it again soon – I’m sure it will feature at the Taunton autumn show & many others! Well done – made my day, especially on the back of impending redundancy! KR’s Roger

  6. Nice to see it running so well on Saturday, but shame the electrical Gremlins struck again on Sunday. However we carried on running with alternate.single line running on the Down Line, as per prototype when Sunday engineering work took place on the Up line. Toad !

  7. Hi guys. Has you Midford layout ever featured in a magazine, and if so which one as I would like to obtain a copy as I’m in the process of building my own N gauge version. Imatation is the best form of flattery!

  8. Hi Peter, Sorry it’s taken a long time to answer your query. The layout featured in Railway Modeller, in two articles. At the moment I can’t recall the dates but I will check the information file at the club as soon as I remember to do so! The layout is being readied to attend the Burnham club’s show at the end of August, still a work in progress but the scenery is so visually interesting it has the WOW factor.

    • Hi John.
Appreciate your reply regarding Midford. Any further exhibition dates (perhaps slightly nearer to North East!)?
Living in the North East its difficult to have a site visit, however a recent holiday in cornwall enabled me to persuade my beloved to take a detour and managed to take some site photos.
Any further information regarding articles will be greatly appreciated.
      Many regards
      Peter

  9. Hi Peter,

Good to see someone reads our site regularly.
We have not been invited outside our area, the next show is at Burnham-on-Sea August bank holiday.

  11. Hi guys,
I saw your layout at Eurospoor in Utrecht yesterday (10-11-2018) and i even got to be a guest driver for which i still can’t thank you enough!
The scenery on Midford is really well made and I liked the way you realistically set up the locomotives and wagons.
I’ll be sure to keep an eye on this site to see if Midford is coming to an exhibition anywhere close to me!

    Kind regards
    Sofie
